Located on the Pacific coast, halfway between the U.S. and Guatemala, Manzanillo, Mexico, has blossomed into a prime resort destination in just a few years. The area encompasses two large bays: Manzanillo Bay to the south and Santiago Bay to the north, which are separated by the Santiago Peninsula, where many fine resort hotels are located. The town is on the south end of Manzanillo Bay and downtown seawalk has been recently spruced up, and a park is being put in along Santiago Bay. The wide beaches on the bays are the big attractions and there are several great golf courses in the area as well.
The town calls itself the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” and deep-sea fishing is excellent November-May. Side trips may be made to the largely undiscovered coast to the south and to Barra de Navidad to the north of Manzanillo, where you will find ecological reserves with turtles, iguanas and all kind of small and large reptiles, and will be able to ride a boat along the mangrove vegetation at the swamps lands. Also, further to the north you will find some less developed beaches with great surfing available.
